Green Day play the ‘biggest show of their fucking lives’ at Wembley Stadium
Biggest show of my life, too. I’ve been to a few things before, but nothing like this. It was truly incredible. I loved it so much.
It was a bit of a rush on Saturday, but we picked up Toby on our way home and I jumped straight into the shower. I got ready in about 20 minutes and we set off for the stadium. We were really excited, messing around with glowsticks in the car!
We got there at about 4:15 and got in pretty quickly. Had a wander around a looked for good seats, since standing would be tiring and we wouldn’t see much. I would have liked to be down where the action was, but I didn’t mind too much. We got some food before Frank Turner came on, who was INCREDIBLE. I love his music, and loved that he was supporting.
After Frank was Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. They were good, although I only knew two of their songs: Bad Reputation and I Love Rock and Roll.
There was a lovely introduction to Green Day before they came on: a big man in a rabbit suit walking around as if he was pissed off his head. It was really funny, he started dancing to Michael Jackson songs and the YMCA, and eventually he left the stage before Green Day came on to a very loud Ramones’ Do you Remember Rock n’ Roll Radio? It was such a cool scene. Seeing their backdrop of New York during 21st Century Breakdown, and singing along as loud as we possible could as the set moved back through time to their old songs from Dookie and Nimrod. King for a Day was even better than on the Bullet in a Bible DVD, and the end to their set was fantastic. A very very loud Minority ended the main set before an encore ending with American Idiot. Billie did a second encore alone, finishing with Give me Novocaine and the classic ending, Good Riddance (Time of your Life).
We left the stadium with numb legs and hands from the cold, and sore throats from singing so loudly. We bought some souvenir T-shirts and waited for our ride home.
I fell asleep in the car on the way back, but woke up just as we pulled up the drive. We fell asleep easily, with me listening to ringing in my ears with a faint Nice Guys Finish Last lullaby playing in my head.
It was a great evening a well looked forward to event and a good reward for last year’s exam results and finishing this year’s. I can’t wait until the next one!
